Nathan and Jennifer were lucky enough to meet after a friend of Jennifer's met and started dating a friend of Nathan's. Now part of a larger circle of friends, Nathan and Jennifer got to know each other over the next couple years.
In April of 2003, Nathan invited Jennifer out to a birthday dinner for Betsy Brown. Jennifer, uncomfortable with crashing a birthday dinner, declined. Nathan persisted, and as a compromise, took her to a separate dinner just for the two of them. Being a gentleman, Nathan paid for dinner. Somehow, that evening has become known as the trick date.
The evening started with a dinner at Neptune Oyster in Boston's North End. When you picture a tiny North End oyster bar, you picture Neptune Oyster: oysters shucked by the dozen in the window to tempt passers by, tables so tightly packed you might mistakenly reach for your neighbor's drink, and a shellfish menu that reads like a map of the New England coast.
After dinner, it was time to head over to Lulu's on Hanover St. for cupcake desserts. Lulu's has decided that a cupcake on it's own simply doesn't satisfy. So they offer cupcakes stuffed with chocolate, peanut butter, and marshmallows.
Finally it was time for the big question. Nathan brought Jennifer to Christopher Columbus Park overlooking the harbor. So after an evening of dinner, dessert, staring out at the harbor, and over 4 years of dating, Nathan finally popped the question. Jennifer's reaction... applause.
It's worth mentioning that the friends mentioned at the begining of the story are our now married friends, Paul and Allison Blake. Betsy Brown is now Betsy Quis. Nathan's cousin Jason, cousin Casey, and sister Alyson have all gotten married. Nathan introduced James Heritage and Jessica Sanchez who are now James and Jessica Heritage. Brian Maclean, who met Kristi after Nathan met Jennifer, is married. Chase and Kirsten are married, though to be fair, they met each other before Nathan met Jennifer. So to answer the question that was often asked...
Yes! It took us awhile.
